갤러리조은은 마이코 코바야시 Maiko Kobayashi (b.1977, Japan)의 개인전 《Beyond Gaze Into Self 시선을 넘어 자아로》을 10월 17일부터 11월 16일까지 개최한다. 갤러리조은과 두 번째 개인전을 갖는 마이코 코바야시는 토끼, 강아지 등 동물을 연상시키는 생명체를 특유의 조형 언어로 표현한다.

코바야시가 반복적으로 그리는 캐릭터들은 단순히 애니메이션이나 만화에서 차용한 것이 아니라 어린아이의 낙서처럼 자연스럽고 순수한 의식의 표현에 가깝다. 작가는 한 인간으로서 자신의 감정을 오롯이 작품에 투영하는데, 손의 움직임으로 추출된 내면의 감정과 생각이 캔버스 위 선과 색이 되어 구체적 ‘존재’로 그 모습을 드러낸다. 작가에 의해 탄생된 ‘존재’들은 마치 하나의 생명체로서 스스로 살아 숨 쉬는 듯, 관람자 혹은 정확히 알 수 없는 어딘가를 응시한다. 단순한 ‘카와이(귀여움)’를 넘어 연약함이나 위태로움을 느끼게 하는 이 캐릭터들은 사랑과 슬픔, 연약함과 강함, 우울과 희망 등 명확하게 규정짓기 힘들고 단순화할 수 없는 우리네 인간의 심상과 닮아 있다.

특히, 소재를 중요하게 생각하는 작가는 일본 전통 화지Washi paper를 찢고, 문지르고 때로는 이어 붙인 뒤 나무 패널이나 캔버스에 붙이는데 이는 작품 전체에 섬세하면서도 강렬한 질감을 더한다. 작가는 찢어질 듯 연약하면서도 동시에 질긴 화지Washi paper의 특성이 인간의 본성과 닮아 있다고 생각한다. “어려운 시간이라 할지라도 실제 삶의 순간을 마주하라”는 작업실 한 켠의 메모처럼 코바야시는 혼란스러운 시대에 살아 남기 위해 노력하는 인간의 강인한 생명력에 삶과 예술의 동력을 얻는다. 이에 다가와시 미술관 관장 타케시 쿠도Takeshi Kudo는 코바야시가 만들어 내는 강렬하고 풍부한 선과 색의 ‘겹’이 현대사회를 살아가는 사람들의 의식의 ‘층’들이 만들어내는 아름다움이라 말하며 작품 속 ‘존재’들은 결국 작가 자신의 자아를 넘어 우리 모두의 얼굴인 현대인의 초상으로 치환된다고 평한다.

본 전시를 통해 18점의 최신작을 공개하는 코바야시는 직관적이고 원초적 표현법이 돋보이는 대형 드로잉 작품 ’SELF’ 뿐만 아니라 화지를 거치지 않고 캔버스에 직접 작업한 ’Meditative Things? ‘연작을 새롭게 선보일 예정이다.

코바야시는 일본 무사시노 미대 Musashino Art University 학사, 영국 노섬브리아 미대 Northumbria University 석사 졸업 후 유럽과 아시아, 미국을 오가며 20년 동안 작품 활동을 이어오고 있다. 일본 군마 현대 미술관 Gunma Museum of Art, 우에시마 콜렉션 UESHIMA COLLECTION, 그리고 이스라엘의 나시마 란다우 아트 파운데이션 Nassima Landau Art Foundation 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다. 2023년 뉴욕(GR Gallery), 홍콩(Gallery Ascend) 개인전에 이어 2024년 홍콩(AISHONANZUKA), 도쿄(ARTDYNE)에서 개인전을 가지며 활발한 작품활동을 이어 오고 있는 코바야시는 올해 연말 아트 마이애미에서 솔로쇼가 예정되어 있다.

Gallery Joeun is pleased to present the solo exhibition 《Beyond Gaze Into Self》 by Maiko Kobayashi (b. 1977, Japan) from October 17 to November 16. Maiko Kobayashi, who is showing her second solo exhibition at Gallery Joeun, uses her unique artistic language to express creatures reminiscent of animals such as rabbits and dogs.

The figures that Kobayashi draws again and again are not simply taken from animations or cartoons, but are a natural and pure __EXPRESSION__ of consciousness, like graffiti by children. As a human being, the artist projects her own emotions into the work, and the inner emotions and thoughts that emerge through her hand movements become lines and colors on the canvas, revealing themselves as concrete "existences". The "presences" created by the artist look at the viewer or an unknown place, just as they themselves live and breathe, like a living being. These figures, which give us the feeling that they are vulnerable or that there is more to them than just "kawaii" (cuteness), resemble our human images that are difficult to define clearly and cannot be simplified, such as love and sadness, vulnerability and strength, melancholy and hope.

The artist, who pays close attention to the support, tears, rubs and binds the traditional Japanese Washi paper and applies it to wooden panels or canvases, giving the whole work a fine and intense texture. The artist believes that the properties of the fragile yet robust Washi paper are similar to human nature. Like a note on the side of the studio that reads, "Face real life even if it is a difficult time," Kobayashi draws her inspiration for life and art from the strong vitality of people trying to survive in chaotic times. Takeshi Kudo, the director of the Tagawa City Museum of Art, commented that the intense and rich "layers" of lines and colours that Kobayashi has created represent the beauty created by the "layers" of consciousness of people living in modern society, and that the "presences" in the work are eventually replaced by portraits of modern people, by the faces of all of us, beyond the artist herself.

Kobayashi, who presents 18 of her latest works in this exhibition, presents a new series of "Meditative Things?", which she painted directly on canvas without using Washi paper, and "SELF"," a large drawing with intuitive and original __EXPRESSION__.

Kobayashi, who studied at Musashino Art University in Japan and Northumbria University in England, has been working in Europe, Asia and the United States for 20 years. Some of her works are in the Gunma Museum of Art in Japan, the Ueshima Collection in Japan and the Nasima Landau Art Foundation in Israel. Following consecutive solo exhibitions in New York(GR Gallery) and Hong Kong(Gallery Ascend) in 2023 and Hong Kong(AISHONANZUKA) and Tokyo(ARTDYNE) in 2024, her solo exhibition will also be on display at Art Miami at the end of this year.
